THE PLAN FOR THE FASTER PATH OF BALKANS INTO THE EU IS OFFICIALLY SUBMITTED TO THE EU MEMBERS

The International Security Institute sent the governments of the European Union members and the Western Balkan countries, on the eve of their summit in Sofia, a proposal to accelerate European integration and consolidate pro-European commitment
in the countries of the region.

Reminding that the upcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia is a unique opportunity for decisions that will speed up and stabilize the European path of the Balkans, the Institute urged the prime ministers of the EU and the Balkan countries to accept the solution from their study “The Western Balkans in the EU” (Western Balkans IN), whose application would bring European reality to the Balkan countries, instead of the so-called – European perspective.

Some solutions from the “Western Balkans in the EU” project, developed by experts from the International Security Institute, have already been incorporated into the EU Strategy for the Western Balkans, adopted on February 6 this year.

The “Western Balkans in the EU” project is based exclusively on a political decision, both EU leaders and the governments of the Western Balkan countries. Its success does not require financial investments, nor any changes in the legislation defining the accession process of the candidate countries. Its potential is that it can, in the short term, strengthen the pro-European spirit in the candidate countries and their governments, as well as to confirm the vitality of the EU as a still attractive project and thus ensure a lasting European orientation of the region, primarily in the political and security sense, is stated, among other things, in a message to the leaders of the EU members and Western Balkan countries on the eve of their Summit in Sofia.
